First Poetry

What is the essence of writing poetry?
Is it to dare to be as gods among mortals?
Is it to pluck the cello strings of the heart
Of your audience like one such as Yo-Yo Ma?

Is it to reinvigorate the essence of your craft—
At least in your eyes, in your blood, in your ears?
Is it to humbly offer verses that might one day
Culminate in the improvement of the world,

Or of the listener? Or to expose, in brilliant light,
Hidden human truth no one talks about?
Is it, in fact, the soft musings of those for whom
Society says there is no place, no home, no rest?

Is it the way those of us who are those people
Find a place, a home, a rest—apart from all?
Is it, in the end, the illumination of truth we see
Subjectively, in an effort to bring objectivity

To a world on fire? Is it illumination of darkness,
Or of Light in shadow? What is it to be a poet?
For in the end, we all are ones—we ourselves
Are a collective, as a collective poem.

What is poetry?
For me, it is the key to that which holds
True meaning—truth painted with a brush divine
On a canvas of souls woven together
In our collective subconscious.

Poetry is.

What is poetry?
The answer lies deep inside, unable to hide.
And though I've tried, it is so wide,
It'll bridge even the deepest divide.

Poetry is.
